Integrated Catchment Management
(ICM) is the coordinated and sustainable use and management of land, water
and biological resources in a river catchment. ICM involves the whole community:
local residents, industry, and the government working together to develop
and implement better management practices.
ICM is the process being used
by the community to regenerate and enhance Loders Creek so that it can regain
its status as a Gold Coast amenity.
Our Creek can become a haven
for native species of flora and fauna, an asset for school and community education,
a pleasant recreational area and an economic benefit.
National Landcare (1995-96)
The first Loders Creek Catchment
Management project was funded through the National Landcare "One Billion
Trees Scheme" with the assistance of the Kalwun Cultural Association,
the Gold Coast's aboriginal peoples council. This association has enhanced
community understanding of the role which the creek and its native flora and
fauna played in the lives of the aboriginal people. We seek a continued and
valuable contribution from the indigenous community.
Work programs have been run in
cooperation with youth training services and Queensland Corrective Services
so that job opportunities are also created through ICM.
A great deal of work is needed
to restore Loders Creek. This task is being undertaken by Loders Creek ICM
Community Association in conjunction with local and state government, and
other community groups.
